YASpooktacular: Story 3

Welcome to another stop for the second annual YASpooktacular, hosted by Frenzy of Noise and Wicked Awesome Books.

This year, there are three stories written by some of your favorite authors that will be posted throughout the week. Each story is a choose your adventure, where you get to decide what path to send the character down. Sometimes you live, sometimes you die, and sometimes you fall into a pit of no return.

There are also some TRICKS or TREATS scattered throughout the story, where you can enter to win prizes and get bonus points toward the prize packs. The prize pack for The Corn Stalker will be up tomorrow! On Halloween day, the grand prize pack will be posted. You can click the banner above to see a full list of the YASpooktacular prize packs!

THE CORN STALKER
Jenn Rush

It sounded like the scream came from the left. Anne. I didn’t know the girl, but if there was a chance I could help her….
“Josh. Hurry!” Kara said. I started in her direction, but thought better of it and backtracked. I couldn’t just leave an innocent girl by herself. Her boyfriend was probably dead….

Dead. Dude was dead and…what the hell was I doing?
“Josh!”
“Keep going,” I told her and disappeared around the corner. The path went straight for a pace, then turned to the right, toward the exit. I slowed, unsure of what I’d find. I hugged the edge of the path and the back of my hand trailed over a cluster of stalk leaves. Something wet came away, sticking to my skin.
I brought my hand up in front of me. The smear looked black in the darkness, but I knew what it was without light. Blood.
A needling sensation ran down my legs. I backpedaled and rammed into something—someone. I whirled around. Anne collapsed against me. Blood trickled from the corner of her mouth.
“Please,” she croaked. “Help me.” Her face was wet with sweat and tears. A dark spot grew in the material of her dress. I could barely make out the shape of a gash stretching from her shoulder to her sternum.
She pulled in a breath and a spurt of fresh blood poured down the front of me. Her mouth curled into a grimace and then she gasped. “Behind you!”

I heard the cut of the blade before I felt the sharp pain of it. Flesh splitting open in a drawn out slur-rup. A burning sensation ran down my spine. The next hit cracked into my shoulder and crushed the bone. The pain was suddenly so intense, I could barely breathe.
I crumpled to my knees. Anne screeched.
I should have gone left, I thought when the third slice of the sickle hit home.

The End.

Author Bio:
View JVRush.jpg in slide showJenn Rush was born in a tiny town right on the shoreline of Lake Michigan.  Jenn always said she’d leave but she hasn’t. Not yet. She have a love/hate relationship with Michigan. The winters are bitter, but she lives in a charmingly retro house. Which is the nice way of saying her house is over eighty years old and has hit the crotchety stage. It needs some love. And she’s too busy for loving.

The first book she ever wrote was about vampires. Loooooong before Twilight!  Jenn’s debut YA novel, Altered, will be hitting shelves come Fall 2012, and will be followed by her middle grade debut, Bot Wars, in the Summer of 2013.

You can find Jenn on Twitter, on her blog, on goodreads.
